Our Founding and Lineage: Rooted in Authentic Karate
At Northern Karate, our foundation is built upon a deep respect for the rich tradition and profound philosophy of Karate. Established in 1972 in Toronto by 10th Degree Black Belt and International Martial Arts Champion, Hanshi Cezar Borkowski, our school has been a steadfast beacon of authentic martial arts training in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond for over five decades.
Hanshi Borkowski’s extensive experience and dedication to the art are unparalleled. A multiple-time champion, he holds the esteemed position of
Director of Karate for the World Kobudo Federation and is recognized as a certified instructor by the All Okinawa Karate & Kobudo Federation in Japan – the very birthplace of this powerful discipline. This direct lineage and commitment to authentic Okinawan Karate principles form the bedrock of Northern Karate’s teachings.
A Legacy of Growth and Impact
Since our inception, Northern Karate has grown to encompass 15 locations in the Greater Toronto Area, as well as international schools, welcoming over 10,000 students each week, ranging in age from 3 to over 70. This widespread reach in the GTA is a testament to the enduring appeal and effectiveness of traditional Karate when taught with passion and integrity.
Our long-standing affiliation with the World Kobudo Federation (WKF), the world’s largest multi-discipline martial arts organization, further reinforces our commitment to upholding the highest standards of martial arts education and connecting our students to a global community of practitioners.
Our Guiding Philosophy: More Than Just Physical Skills
However, our dedication to tradition extends beyond the physical techniques. At Northern Karate, we embrace the core philosophy that a martial arts education is a powerful “vehicle for self-discovery and positive change.” We believe, as the ancient masters did, that the true essence of Karate lies not just in physical prowess, but in the cultivation of character, discipline, and respect.
For over fifty years in the GTA, Northern Karate Schools have been more than just a place to learn to “kick and punch well.” We are a community dedicated to fostering “respect for themselves and others” in our students as they strive to achieve their “PERSONAL BEST” in all aspects of their lives. This holistic approach honours the true spirit of Karate – a path of self-improvement that extends far beyond the dojo.
Serving Our Community: Giving Back Through Martial Arts
Our history in the GTA is marked not only by the achievements of our instructors and students, who have been recognized in local, national, and international media but also by our unwavering commitment to serving the community that has supported us. Through numerous charitable initiatives, including food and clothing drives and significant fundraising efforts for organizations like the Starlight Foundation (through our annual Brooke Brunetta memorial tournaments, having donated over $100,000 to date), Daily Bread, KidsHelpPhone, and many others, we actively strive to embody the principle of positive change within our society.
Recognized Leaders in Martial Arts Education
Northern Karate Schools have been consistently recognized as leaders in martial arts education and personal development for over four decades, earning the distinction of being voted #1 by numerous respected publications such as Eye Weekly, NOW Magazine, City Parent, The Globe and Mail, and the Toronto Sun. This recognition underscores our enduring commitment to providing high-quality, traditional Karate instruction that empowers individuals and strengthens our community.
Honouring the Tradition, Shaping the Future
At Northern Karate, we are proud to carry forward the tradition of Karate – a legacy of discipline, respect, and self-improvement that continues to enrich the lives of our students.
